Box Score Tamara Nesmith tallied 18 points and nine rebounds, and Alyssa Luebs scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half as Mount Olive remained unbeaten in conference play and extended its winning streak to five with a 65-59 victory over King in Conference Carolinas women's basketball Saturday at Bristol, Tenn. The Trojans led the entire second half, but needed late free throws by Nesmith and Destinee Webb to seal the win.
Mount Olive (9-3 overall, 3-0 Conference Carolinas) broke away from a three-point halftime lead as Luebs' putback with 13:07 left to play gave the Trojans their biggest lead of the contest at 49-37. King (1-11, 1-3) then held Mount Olive to just a field goal over the next five-plus minutes as Kelly Jackson's layup pulled the Tornado within 51-48 with 7:43 remaining.
Luebs answered with a layup and Andrea Jones followed with a pair of free throws and a jumper as the Trojans extended the lead to nine. Mount Olive maintained at least a two-possession lead for the final 6:26 of the game.
Brooke Johnson sank a pair of free throws for King and after a Trojan turnover, Johnson's three-pointer drew the Tornado within 59-55 with 1:25 left. That would be as close as King would get.
Nesmith connected on a pair of free throws and Jasmine McDonald's steal eventually led to a basket by Webb to give the Trojans a 63-55 advantage with 42 seconds remaining. Webb added a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left and King scored a basket just before the buzzer for the final score.
In the first half, Mount Olive fell behind 9-2 before three-pointers by Jones and Joneiqua Gary highlighted a 22-6 run that put the Trojans ahead to stay. The margin grew to as many as 10, but Mount Olive was held to a single free throw over the final four minutes and settled for a 33-30 halftime lead.
Mount Olive committed a season-low 11 turnovers, only four coming in the second half. The Trojans committed only 13 turnovers two nights earlier against Pfeiffer.
Jones finished with nine points for Mount Olive, snapping her streak of consecutive double-figure games at 16, dating back to the 2010-11 season. Nesmith added six steals and shared team-high honors with four assists for the Trojans. Luebs also dished out four assists and pulled down seven rebounds.
Johnson scored all of her team-high 15 points in the second half for King, while Jackson finished with game highs of 10 rebounds and six assists. The Tornado shot 50 percent (20-for-40) from the field, but committed 26 turnovers.
Mount Olive returns to Conference Carolinas action Wednesday as the Trojans travel to Wilson, N.C., to take on Barton in "Battle of the East 2." Last year marked the first Battle of the East between the two rival schools, which are only 45 minutes apart. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
