GREENVILLE, S.C. (April 22) - On Wednesday afternoon, the conference honored five women's lacrosse players All-Conference honors, while one Spitfire defender was chosen first team all-conference and defensive player of the year. The coaches in the league select these honors.
After their outstanding achievements for the Trojans this season,
Katie Broom,
Giavahna Gasdia,
Morghan Pollock, and
Ruby Burandt were selected all-conference recipients.
Simone McCraw, on the other hand, excelled on defense and won defensive player of the year for the second consecutive year.
Simone McCraw, a junior from Columbus, Ohio, participated in and started all 15 games this season. Her regular season stats include a staggering 41 ground balls and 39 caused turnovers. In her two years with the Trojans, McCraw has participated in 34 games, starting 33 of them, winning 46 draw controls, and recorded 84 ground balls and 94 turnovers. With an average of 2.80 ground balls per game and an average of 2.60 caused turnovers per game, she is rated third in the league and tenth in the conference. This marks the ninth year in a row that UMO has won defensive player of the year.
Senior defender
Giavahna Gasdia hails from Havre De Grace, Maryland. With 42 ground balls, 26 turnovers, and 37 draw controls, she was named to the first team all-conference. This season, Gasdia participated in and started every game. She has played 57 games and started 48 over her four years in college. She won 40 draw controls total and hit the milestone of 100 ground balls, 66 of which resulted in turnovers.
Katie Broom, a redshirt junior from Houston, Texas, was named to the first team and all-conference for attack after scoring 43 goals overall, dishing out 15 assists, swiping 24 ground balls, causing 16 turnovers, and winning 61 draw controls this season. This season, she started and participated in every game. She has scored 78 goals and sent out 29 assists in the last two years while also grabbing 42 ground balls, causing 28 turnovers, and controlling 72 draws.
Morgan Pollock, a sophomore attacker from Carver, Minnesota, was named to the second team all-conference. This season, she started and participated in every game, recording 36 goals, 11 assists, 21 ground balls, seven turnovers, and five draw controls. She has 51 goals, 15 assists, 40 ground balls, eight turnovers, and six draw controls in her two seasons here.
Ruby Burandt, a junior goalkeeper from Savage, Minnesota, is the final honoree. Burandt has six victories under her belt and 70 saves with a save percentage of.414. She played a total of 670:59 minutes in her 245 shots faced. She has participated in 15 games this season, started 12, collected 25 ground balls, and created one turnover, according to game-by-game statistics. Over her three years as a member of the team, she has made 81 saves, gathered 34 ground balls, and committed two giveaways during her time at UMO.
On Thursday, April 23, at 3 PM in Young Harris, Georgia, the Mount Olive Trojans will play Belmont Abbey in the Conference Carolina championship semifinals.
