WINSTON-SALEM (Feb. 19) – Junior
Karla Hormazabal was named the Field Athlete of the Year, as the University of Mount Olive women's track & field program featured five event champions in a runner-up finish at the Conference Carolinas Indoor Championships at the JDL Fast Track.
Hormazabal scored in three events at the conference championship and totaled 13 points toward the team standings for the Trojans. On Sunday, she placed seventh overall in the high jump and long jump before delivering a career-best performance on Monday. Hormazabal captures her second-straight league title in the triple jump after reaching 12.24 meters (40-2.00 feet) on her final attempt to set a new meet record. She hit the NCAA provisional standard and now holds the 11th-best mark in the event in NCAA Division II.
Converse claimed its first-ever league title after scoring 167 points to narrowly defeat the Trojans, who scored 166 points at the conference meet. Mount Olive scored in 13 of a possible 16 events over the two-day competition, including five event champions. UNC Pembroke placed third overall with 68 points.
In the shot put, the Trojans totaled 32 of a possible 39 points with five individuals among the top-eight scorers in the event. Sophomore
Ashley Lindsey defended her conference crown in the event following a season-best toss of 11.82 meters (38-9.50 feet) on her final attempt.
Senior
Vinesha Briggs produced a time of 57.27 seconds in the 400 meters to secure her first individual league title during the indoor season.
Sophomore
Chianel Asoburuenwu captured her first indoor title in the 60-meter dash after crossing the line with a blistering pace of 7.63 seconds.
