The Trojans shutout Wingate in league play, 2-0

MOUNT OLIVE (Oct. 16) – In a rematch of the two top teams in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC), the University of Mount Olive field hockey team delivered a 2-0 shutout win over Wingate on Wednesday afternoon at Ray McDonald Sr. Sports Complex.

With the win, the Trojans claimed a fourth straight victory to improve to 8-3 this season with a 7-2 record in conference play. The season series between the sides ends in a split with each team securing a shutout on their home field. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs have their seven-match winning streak snapped and drop to 10-2 overall behind an 8-2 mark in league action.

Mount Olive controlled possession throughout most of the first quarter while registering two shots and two penalty corners. Wingate managed to record a pair of shots in the initial minute of the second quarter, but the Trojans countered with the opening goal of the contest. At the 17:30 mark, senior Jule Schuurman scored off the far post following a pass by a fellow senior Annefleur Moerkerken to take a 1-0 lead. Mount Olive would increase its advantage at the 23:00 mark after a passing from sophomore Rosie Migounoff found Moerkerken, who slotted home her fifth goal of the year, 2-0.

The Bulldogs pressured the offensive end of the field in the opening five minutes of the third quarter with graduate student goalkeeper Alanna Barrett producing a save. At the 37:45 mark, senior Sophia Frugoni nearly extended the lead after hitting the post before the attacking opportunity was cleared by Wingate. In the fourth, both sides exchanged two shots with UMO sealing the 2-0 shutout win.

Barrett secured her third shutout of the season after collecting four saves in 60 minutes of action.

Mount Olive out-shot Wingate by a 9-7 margin while recording an 8-5 edge in penalty corners.

The Trojans return to action on Saturday, Oct. 19, when they travel to face Belmont Abbey in South Atlantic Conference action at 1 p.m.
