Box Score Mount Olive freshman Nick Bernsdorf turned away seven Limestone shots, many during a furious rally late in the match. A goal in the 85th minute, however, broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the visiting Saints to a 2-1 decision in the Conference Carolinas men's soccer opener for both teams.
Limestone recorded many of its 11 shots after intermission in the final 10 minutes. At 85:52, Jack Bailey finally found the corner of the goal on his team's next to last attempt. Bailey placed a shot from 20 yards out just inside the upper right corner of the goal after taking a lead pass from teammate Larry Mahon.
The goal ruined a strong defensive performance from the Trojans, who turned away one shot after another from the conference's top-scoring attack from a year ago.
After falling behind in the 11th minute, Mount Olive (0-2) fought back as Tyler Vandevender scored from point blank range after the Saints failed to clear a crossing kick by Emmanuel Wennah at 24:51.
The Trojans failed to score just moments before on a similar play. Instead the Trojans were unable to get a clean shot off and the ball sailed wide.
Opportunities were few and far between for the Trojans the rest of the way. Mount Olive attempted just three shots on goal in the match, one in the second period.
Limestone struck first when Benjamin Morande claimed the ball just outside the box and raced between two Mount Olive defenders for marker.
The Trojans return to action Wednesday night when Francis Marion comes to Amon Field for a 7 p.m. contest.
