Tyler Vandevender scored his second goal in as many matches, but Francis Marion scored 32 seconds into overtime to keep Mount Olive out of the win column, 2-1, Wednesday night at Amon Field.
After 77 minutes of scoreless soccer, the teams erupted for a pair of goals in the final 13 minutes of regulation.
Both teams saw numerous opportunities in the second period get away. After a 30-minute timeout due to an injury to the Trojans' Kelly Keaton, the offenses came back to the field on a mission. Mount Olive (0-3) struck first when Vandevender corralled a crossing pass from teammate Emmanuel Wennah and found the ribght corner of the net in the 77th minute. One minute later, however, the Patriots (1-3) delivered the equalizer in the form of Alex Blandin, who blasted a penalty kick past Trojan goalkeeper Nick Bernsdorf.
Following the injury to Keaton, who was taken down from behind by a Francis Marion player, the match took on a different look. In the final 13 minutes of regulation, four yellow cards were handed out, including one that set up the Patriots' penalty kick, and one that led to the injury.
In the final minutes of regulation, the Patriots' Robin Schittenheim delivered a header aimed at the corner of the goal. Instead it glanced off the post in the 85th minute. Moments later, a header attempt by Wennah was saved by Francis Marion keeper Taylor King.
Blandin had a pair of golden opportunities in the final minute to end the match, but one shot was blocked and another sailed wide.
In the extra session, Francis Marion wasted little time. Pascal Magiera chipped a pass into the box to Cody Farrior who split a pair of Trojan defenders to deliver the winner 28 seconds into overtime.
The Trojans will try to rebound Thursday night when Northwood travels to Amon Field for a 7 p.m. start.
