Baseball Comeback Falls Short In 11-Inning Loss To LeMoyne

Mount Olive spotted visiting LeMoyne College four runs in the top of the first, only to come back and force extra innings before a home run in the 11th sent the Trojans to an 8-6 loss in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Scarborough Field. In the nightcap, Daniel Coffey slugged a two-run homer, but errors proved costly in a 7-3 loss.

In the opener, Geno Escalante was 3-for-5 and scored three times, and Jermaine Berry slugged a three-run homer to lead a 11-hit attack for Mount Olive (5-3). LeMoyne got a pair of home runs from Brian Stinson, including a solo blast to lead off the 11th, proving to be the game-winner.

The Trojans fell behind 4-0 thanks to Stinson's first blast, a three-run shot after Mount Olive failed to turn a double play that would have ended the inning without a score.

Mount Olive got one of the runs back in the first on an RBI-single by Bradon Reitano. Berry's single started a rally in the second. Cameron Sherrer singled then Berry raced home on an error.

In the third, the Trojans pulled even on Berry's two-out homer to left. Escalante singled to lead off the frame, then trotted home on the blast two outs later.

The Dolphins (2-0), who were a Division I program a year ago, regained the lead in the fourth, scoring two runs with only one hit. A pair of hit-batsmen to lead off the inning spelled trouble for Mount Olive. An error on a pick-off play allowed two runs to score.

LeMoyne held the 6-4 lead until the bottom of the ninth. Antonio Callaway and Escalante led off with walks, then Jacob Rogers singled home a run. After Reitano walked to load the bases with one out. Berry sent a screaming line drive down the first-base line that appeared to be a game-winner, but Dolphin first baseman Kody O'Connor made a diving stop. Escalante raced home with the tying run, but the play kept the winning run on base.

In the 11th, Stinson's second homer was the difference.

The loss ruined a strong performance by reliever Talton Cherry (0-1), who allowed just one earned run in six innings out of the bullpen. The Dolphins' fifth pitcher in the game, Kevin Carroll (1-0) recorded the win.

In the second game, the Dolphins used four unearned runs in the fifth to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Mount Olive took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Berry legged out an infield single to keep the inning going for Coffey, who slammed a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence.

For most of the game, however, Dolphin pitcher Derek Zielinski (1-0) was in control, retiring 13 straight batters at one point. LeMoyne tied the game in the third, then three hits and two Mount Olive errors in the fifth paved the way for a four-run inning.

The Trojans managed to push across a run in the seventh when Rogers led off with a double, moved to third on a single by Nick Gaeta and a wild pitch.

The teams will meet for another doubleheader Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
