MOUNT OLIVE (July 3) – The University of Mount Olive baseball program showcased four student-athletes on the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team, as redshirt senior
Mike Kenney, redshirt junior
Anthony Mitta, graduate student
Hayden Myrick, and junior
Raleigh Walker each earned the award.
To qualify for CSC Academic All-District honors, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically, maintain a cumulative 3.50 GPA, and have played in 90 percent of the team's games (previously 50 percent) or start 66 percent of the team's games. For pitcher nominations, the minimum is 17 appearances or 35.0 innings pitched. Additionally, each institution is capped at five nominees in the sport of baseball.
Kenney was voted to the ABCA NCAA Division II Southeast Region All-Defensive Team while also collecting a similar accolade from the Conference Carolinas. He produced an impressive .996 fielding percentage with 242 putouts and 30 assists while registering 16 caught stealing behind the plate. At the plate, Kenney posted a .293 batting average with three homers, 27 runs batted in, and 35 runs scored. He earns the academic award for a second-straight year. Kenney recently graduated with a degree in accounting while boasting a 3.92 GPA.
A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Mitta registered 29 hits, four doubles, 21 runs batted in, and 17 runs scored in 38 starts. He maintains a 3.71 GPA while majoring in sport management.
For a consecutive year, Myrick receives CSC Academic All-District honors following 23 appearances out of the bullpen. He registered a 3-2 record on the mound with seven saves over 32.1 innings pitched. Myrick garnered All-Conference Carolinas Second-Team honors after being one of the top relievers in the league. He graduated with a master's degree in business administration with a 3.81 GPA.
Walker made 14 appearances on the mound with three starts and posted a 2-2 record for the Trojans. He tossed 18.2 innings with six appearances of at least two innings pitched while tallying 15 strikeouts. Walker is pursuing a degree in business management and holds a 3.65 GPA.
Note, starting in the 2023-24 academic year advancement from Academic All-District submission to the Academic All-America ballot will be determined by subcommittees of the CSC Academic All-America program (formerly CoSIDA).
