Box Score Emmanuel Wennah tallied two goals and an assist as Mount Olive rallied from a 2-0 second-half deficit for a 4-3 win over Chowan in non-conference men's soccer Wednesday at Amon Field. Tanner Tolston added a goal and an assist for the Trojans.
Mount Olive (3-6-1) got on the scoreboard four minutes after Chowan scored its second goal of the match. Tolston played the ball to Wennah, who spun around a defender in the left side of the box and pulled the Trojans within 2-1 at the 52:04 mark.
Tolston followed with the tying goal just three minutes later off a corner kick. Mason Watkins had the assist as the Trojans tied the match 2-2 at the 55:58 mark.
The contest remained even until 75:30 when Alex Bosch put the Trojans ahead to stay. Bosch's header just inside the left post redirected Wennah's shot and gave Mount Olive 3-2.
An improbable goal by Wennah gave the Trojans a 4-2 advantage at the 84:33 mark. Wennah outfought a Chowan defender for the ball and shot blindly from 25 yards out. The ball went just over the Hawks goalkeeper's outstretched hand to give Mount Olive a two-goal lead.
Wennah's insurance goal proved to be the game winner as Chowan (2-8-0) answered less than 90 seconds later. Forrest Byers' long service set up Antonio Carrabotta for a one-on-one at 85:59. But the Trojans held the Hawks without a shot the rest of the way to hold on for the win.
Chowan took a 1-0 lead on Adam Smith's goal in the 15th minute. The Hawks capitalized when Mount Olive was unable to clear a long throw-in. Dale Pearson's goal three minutes into the second half gave Chowan a 2-0 lead. Carrabotta assisted on each of the Hawks' first two goals.
Mount Olive recorded 13 shots in the second half and outshot Chowan 22-13 for the match. Trojan goalkeeper Nick Bernsdorf recorded three saves in 85-plus minutes. Angel Sanchez played the final four minutes in goal for the Trojans. Chowan goalkeeper Grayson Smith had six of his nine saves in the first half.
Mount Olive's four goals matched the team's season high. The two-goal comeback was the first for the Trojans in more than a decade.
The Trojans continue non-conference play Monday when Mount Olive travels to Aiken, S.C., to take on USC Aiken. Match time is 7 p.m.
