Box Score Mount Olive scored twice in less than three minutes in the second half, backing the goaltending of Nick Bernsdorf en route to a 2-0 non-conference men's soccer win over Catawba Wednesday night at Amon Field. Bernsdorf recorded his third shutout of the season, recording three saves.
Mount Olive (4-8-2 overall) kept the pressure on the Indian defense, but it was not until John Kwennah re-directed a chip from Craig Allan into the right corner of the goal at the 68-minute mark that the Trojans had a lead to work with. Allan received a pass from teammate Kelly Keaton, then raced down the left sideline before sending a crossing shot. Kwennah got his foot on the ball as Catawba keeper Evan Harvey dove to cut off the angle to the net. Harvey pinned the ball against the post, but it was ruled the ball crossed the line.
Three minutes later, the Trojans struck again. Tyler Vandevender served a perfect pass to Tanner Tolston who headed the ball into the right corner. The markers were the second apiece for Kwennah and Tolston.
The Trojans' attack threatened to strike several times in the opening period. Harvey beat Allan to the ball before he could get off a shot on a breakaway in the first minute of the contest. Just before intermission, Allan just missed the net from a severe angle to the goal after a pass from Alex Rodriguez.
Bernsdorf's toughest opportunity came in the 24th minute when he made a leaping catch in traffic on a corner opportunity for the Indians.
Mount Olive played most of the second half with a man advantage after an Indian player was given a red card. The Indians (7-5-3), however, were able to gain more scoring opportunities after intermission, however, thanks to a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. The Trojans finished the contest with a 14-8 advantage in shots.
The contest is the final non-conference test for the Trojans. Mount Olive travels to Belmont Abbey Saturday for a 3 p.m. start. The women's match will begin at 12:30 p.m.
