Men's Basketball Falls To Pfeiffer 91-89 In Overtime

Kendall Hargrove scored a career-high 27 points off the bench and Craig Hayes hit the tying basket with 17 seconds left in overtime, but Pfeiffer's K.C. Anuna hit a 16-foot jumper with less than a second remaining to hand Mount Olive a 91-89 loss in Conference Carolinas men's basketball Thursday at Misenheimer, N.C. Derek Staton added 21 points, including a three-pointer late in overtime to help the Trojans rally from a five-point deficit.

After Mount Olive (8-4 overall, 1-1 Conference Carolinas) saw a 13-point second-half lead disappear, Hargrove connected on a pair of free throws with 24 seconds left in regulation to give the Trojans an 83-81 lead. Pfeiffer's Danny Smith tied the game on a layup with seven seconds left and Anuna blocked a Trojan shot at the buzzer to force overtime.

Neither team scored in overtime until Smith's three-point play with 2:39 remaining put Pfeiffer (8-4, 2-0) on top. Dory Hines hit 1-of-2 free throws with 1:27 left for Mount Olive's first point of overtime, but Elijah Matthews hit a three-pointer to extend the Falcons' lead to 89-84 with 1:15 left.

Staton answered with a three-pointer with 1:06 remaining and pulled down the rebound on a Falcon missed shot to give the Trojans possession with 34 seconds left. Hayes put back a missed shot to tie the game 89-89 with 17 seconds remaining.

Pfeiffer inbounded without a timeout and Anuna hit a fadeaway jumper from just above the free throw line for the game winner.

Mount Olive broke away from a one-point lead early in the second half with three-pointers on consecutive possessions by Staton, Hayes and Hargrove. Jordan McCain's layup with 15:19 left in regulation gave the Trojans their biggest lead of the game at 62-49.

Pfeiffer cut the margin to single digits, but Ewon Wright's second three-pointer of the game gave Mount Olive a 72-61 lead with 8:24 remaining. Matthews answered with a three-pointer for the Falcons and the margin never grew above eight the rest of the way.

Mount Olive saw its lead cut to a field goal before Hargrove hit a layup and Deshaune Green sank a pair of free throws to give the Trojans an 81-76 lead with 2:21 left. Anuna hit a layup for Pfeiffer and Matthews tied the game 81-81 after stealing the inbounds pass and converting a three-point play with 1:25 remaining.

In the first half, Mount Olive trailed 16-9 before Hargrove's three-pointer highlighted a 7-0 run to tie the game. Ewon Wright converted a rare four-point play 9:59 remaining and added a pair of free throws 57 seconds later to give the Trojans a 25-20 lead.

Tayron Gibson's three-pointer helped Pfeiffer even the score as the game saw three ties and two lead changes in a span of two minutes. Three-pointers by Derek Staton and Hargrove put Mount Olive on top for the remainder of the half as the Trojans built their biggest lead at 44-36 with 2:10 left before the break. The Trojans were limited to a single free throw in the final two minutes of the half and settled for a 45-42 halftime lead.

A freshman from Woodbridge, Va., Hargrove matched his previous collegiate single-game high with 14 points in the first half. He led all scorers in the game, going 8-for-11 from the field and 7-for-11 from the free throw line. Hargrove also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds to with a game-high five steals. Hines dished out a game-high eight assists.

Smith led Pfeiffer with 26 points, while Anuna finished with 21 points. Matthews scored 17 points off the bench for the Falcons.

Mount Olive plays its third Conference Carolinas game in five days Saturday as the Trojans travel to Bristol, Tenn., to take on first-year conference member King. Tip-off is 4 p.m.
