Mahamed Ibrahim's Three-Point Barrage Lifts Men's Basketball Past Queens

Box Score

Mahamed Ibrahim scored 21 of his career-high 27 points in the first half, 19 coming during a game-breaking 23-4 run as Mount Olive handed East Division leader Queens its first conference loss 82-58 in Conference Carolinas men's basketball Wednesday at Kornegay Arena. Ibrahim, who scored the first 15 points of the scoring run, hit 5-of-6 three-pointers in the first half and 7-for-11 for the game as the Trojans extended their winning streak to four.

Craig Hayes was 11-for-14 from the field and led all scorers with 28 points for the Trojans. He also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season.

The first of Ibrahim's five first-half three-pointers put Mount Olive (12-6, 5-3 Conference Carolinas) ahead for the remainder of the half just over five minutes into the contest. The Trojans built the lead to as many as five points before Queens (12-6, 7-1) pulled within 19-17 on Sean Eads' three-pointer with 9:28 before halftime.

Layups by Jordan McCain and Dory Hines stretched Mount Olive's lead to six before Eads answered with another three-pointer. That's when Ibrahim helped the Trojans break the game open.

Ibrahim hit three treys in less than 90 seconds to give Mount Olive its first double-digit lead at 32-22 with 6:28 remaining. He hit a short jumper after a steal by Hines, then knocked down another three with 5:21 left. Hayes' basket ended Ibrahim's points streak, but Ibrahim followed with an uncontested dunk off of Kendall Hargrove's steal and hit another jumper as the Trojans took their biggest lead of the first half at 46-24 with 2:01 remaining.

Queens got as close as 17 before Kason Cheeks' basket with 44 seconds left gave Mount Olive a 48-29 halftime lead. The Trojans shot 57.1 percent (20-for-35) from the field in the first 20 minutes, including 13-for-16 (81.3 percent) during the scoring run. Ibrahim's first-half total matched his previous career high, set December 30, 2010, against Augusta State during his sophomore year.

Hayes scored Mount Olive's first six points of the second half and the Trojans extended their lead to 53-30 with 17:59 left to play. The lead was still 20 with more than 13 minutes remaining when Queens started to rally. Antonio Stabler and Eads scored four points apiece during a 9-2 run to pull the Royals within 62-49 with 9:57 left. But Staton answered with a long two-pointer from the top of the key and the margin never fell below 14 the rest of the way.

Ibrahim was held scoreless in the second half until knocking down two more three-pointers 78 seconds apart in the final four minutes. Ewon Wright's three-pointer with 2:10 gave Mount Olive its biggest lead at 82-55.

Hayes and Ibrahim were the only two Trojans in double figures. In his last three games, Hayes is 31-for-41 from the field. Staton finished with eight points and seven assists, while Hines had eight rebounds and six assists. Cheeks pulled down seven boards for Mount Olive, which outrebounded Queens 43-35.

Daniel Bailey led Queens with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Eads added 13 points off the bench on 3-for-4 three-point shooting.
