Box Score Derek Staton scored a game-high 20 points and Dory Hines notched his second straight 10-assist game as Mount Olive withstood a late rally to defeat Virginia State 84-77 in the final day of the 46th Annual Pickle Classic Saturday at Kornegay Arena. Staton and Hines were named to the All-Tournament Team, along with Mahamed Ibrahim, who scored 11 points on 5-for-6 shooting.
In the opening game, Jaren Haley led four players in double figures and Jon Hart notched a double-double to lead Barton to an 89-55 victory. Barton finished 2-0 at the Pickle Classic, while Brevard went 0-2.
Mount Olive returns to action Monday to play its third game in four days as the Trojans travel to Hickory, N.C., to take on Lenoir-Rhyne in a non-conference match-up. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
Mount Olive 84, Virginia State 77
Mount Olive (4-0) built a double-digit lead midway through the first half and scored the first four points of the second half to build the margin to 47-27. Virginia State (0-4) cut the lead in half after Ibn Rassoull's second three-pointer in a span of three minutes helped make the score 54-44 with 15:21 left to play.
Mount Olive started pulling away as Kendall Hargrove's steal and uncontested dunk capped an 8-0 run and gave the Trojans a 64-46 lead with 10:29 remaining. Hargrove hit a three-pointer with 6:57 left to give Mount Olive its biggest lead of the game at 76-54. But the Trojans would hit only two more field goals the remainder of the game, giving Virginia State a chance to claw back.
Virginia State scored the next 11 points and before Kason Cheeks' baseline layup off a pass from Hines stopped the run and gave Mount Olive a 78-65 lead with 3:09 remaining. The margin fell to single digits as Justin Bess hit a pair of three-pointers to pull Virginia State within 81-73 with 1:08 left to play.
Virginia State looked poised to make it a two-possession game, but a slam dunk attempt rattled out and Craig Hayes sank a pair of free throws on the other end with 45 seconds left to extend Mount Olive's lead to 83-73. Virginia State never got closer than seven points.
In the first half, after spotting Virginia State the first five points of the contest, Mount Olive responded with a 14-2 run as Staton knocked down a pair of three-pointers and Darrell Patterson added a three. Staton and Patterson each connected on a three-pointer during a 12-1 run as the Trojans extended their lead to 31-14 with 6:19 left before halftime.
The margin grew to as many as 20 points before Mount Olive settled in for a 43-27 lead at the break.
Dory Hines came within range of the first-ever triple-double in Mount Olive men's basketball history, scoring nine points and pulling down seven rebounds to go with his fourth collegiate double-digit assists total. Mount Olive shot 61.2 percent (30-for-49) from the field, including 10-for-19 from three-point range. But the Trojans struggled from the free throw line, going only 14-for-32.
Kenny Mitchell led Virginia State with 19 points and nine rebounds, while Rassoull added 18 points. Rassoull was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Barton 89, Brevard 55
Jaren Haley hit a pair of three-pointers during a 31-6 run in the first half as Barton (4-1) broke open close game. After trailing by a point early, the Bulldogs used Haley's second three-pointer and three straight field goals by Gerald Boston to build a 36-12 lead with 7:39 left.
The margin stay above 20 for the final four minutes of the half and Barton took its biggest lead at 55-24 on Aaron Coats' three-point play with 1:26 remaining. The Bulldogs led 59-32 at the break.
In the second half, Barton's lead never fell below 25 points and the final score was the largest margin of the game.
Jon Hart finished with 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for Barton, while Aaron Suggs added 14 points and Gerald Boston tallied 11 points and eight assists.
Gaither Hendrix led all scorers for the second straight night with 20 points for Brevard (0-5). Hendrix had 27 Friday against Mount Olive. Darius Moose added 12 points and six rebounds.
Barton and Brevard were whistled for a combined 50 fouls. Both teams shot 25-for-31 from the free throw line.
Boston, Haley and Hendrix were named to the All-Tournament Team.
