INDIANAPOLIS (April 30) – The University of Mount Olive women's lacrosse program debuted at eighth in the final NCAA Division II South Regional rankings, which were released by the D2 Women's Lacrosse Committee on Tuesday morning.
The NCAA regional rankings determine the participants for the NCAA Tournament. The South Region consists of the Conference Carolinas (CC), Gulf South Conference (GSC), and the Sunshine State Conference (SSC). All three conference tournament champions receive an automatic bid with the top-three remaining teams in rankings receiving at-large bids. Additionally, the top two seeds in the South Region will receive a bye to the second round and serve as host institutions. The selection show is set for Sunday, May 4, at 8:30 p.m. A link to the show will be on the front page of NCAA.com.
Tampa, the SSC conference champions, continue to be the top-ranked team in the poll with a 17-1 overall record while riding a seven-game winning streak. Florida Southern ranks second and holds a 17-2 mark this season after finishing as the runner-up in the SSC, but boasts the top RPI in the region. Embry-Riddle sits third overall with a 16-3 record while Lynn moved into the fourth spot behind a 13-4 mark. Saint Leo (13-6) remains fifth in the rankings and Flagler (12-5) jumped to sixth after clinching the automatic bid following a GSC Championship. Lander sits seventh with a 13-4 mark while Mount Olive rounded out the poll with an 11-7 record and has already secured an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Trojans will be making their second appearance in the NCAA Tournament after capturing its fifth-straight Conference Carolinas Championship. With the expansion of the national field over the summer, the Conference Carolinas Champion received an automatic bid for the first time in league history. The Division Ii Women's Lacrosse Championship with featured 24 teams in the postseason.
