WILMINGTON, N.C. (March 9) – In the opening meet of the outdoor campaign, the University of Mount women's track & field program set 21 Conference Carolinas qualifying marks and one NCAA provisional standard at the UNCW Seahawk Invitational over the weekend.
The 4x100 relay team of freshman
Sanyiah Shields, senior
Lasira Nicholson, sophomore
Heavan Roberts, and junior
Channie Jefferson hit the NCAA qualifying mark with a blistering pace of 46.43 seconds to earn first place and set the third-best time in the NCAA Division II this season.
In the hammer throw, the Trojans had six athletes reach the league standard in the event, led by sophomore
Elin Rydqvist, who captured first place with a toss of 51.22 meters. Junior
Kenisha Barnes placed third overall with a distance of 49.92 meters, while freshman
Isabelle Grena finished fifth with a mark of 44.39 meters. Sophomore
Peyton Bucher finished sixth with a toss of 44.21 meters and junior
Cynthia Thomas secured an eighth-place finish with a distance of 41.22 meters. Senior
Kaitlin Kenan rounded out the group with a mark of 40.75 meters.
Junior
Keza Green registered a first-place finish in the triple jump following a leap of 11.21 meters to reach the league mark.
Jefferson finished second overall in the 400 meters after crossing the line in 56.79 seconds, which reached the conference qualifying mark and set the fourth-fastest time in program history.
Sophomore
MacKenna Gallon recorded a third-place finish in the javelin with a toss of 31.28 meters to hit the league standard in the season-opening meet.
In the shot put, UMO featured four student-athletes who reached the Conference Carolinas mark on Saturday. Freshman
Jasmine Colwell earned sixth overall with a toss of 12.62 meters, which ranks her sixth all-time at Mount Olive. Kenan finished seventh with a distance of 11.22 meters, while Grena posted a mark of 10.86 meters. Junior
Ashley Lindsey also reached the qualifying mark with a toss of 10.80 meters.
Freshman
Amiliana Simmons secured a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:07.57, which sits ninth all-time at UMO. The sophomore duo of
Keianna Mims and
Brianna Davis placed fifth and sixth, respectively, with marks of 1:07.84 and 1:11.36 to hit the conference standard.
Shields finished fifth overall in the 200 meters with a time of 25.17 to reach the league mark.
Senior
Jamesha Howell placed fifth following a leap of 5.38 meters to hit the conference qualifying mark in the long jump.
In the discus, the Trojans also had four individuals set a Conference Carolinas mark while competing in Wilmington. Barnes led the way with a fifth-place finish following a toss of 37.10 meters. Grena registered a distance of 36.14 meters and Colwell hit 34.90 meters, while Lindsey rounded out the team with a toss of 34.38 meters.
The women's track & field program returns to action next weekend as four individuals travel to Indianapolis to compete in the NCAA Indoor National Championships on March 13-15.
