MOUNT OLIVE (Feb. 15) - Senior
Alexis Durham registered her ninth double-digit scoring game of the season, as the Trojans fell by a 66-44 margin against Young Harris in Conference Carolinas play at Kornegay Arena on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the University of Mount Olive women's basketball team moves to 3-19 on the season while its record in league action drops to 2-15. The Trojans will have a few days to rest before their final home game of this season this upcoming Wednesday at home against their long-time rival Barton College. Meanwhile, Young Harris improves to 16-8 on the year and 10-6 within the conference.
Durham finished with a team-high 10 points on four-of-eight shooting while also dishing out six assists in 37 minutes on her senior night. Freshman guard
Ashley Browne had a career-best nine points on four-of-eight shooting while tallying three rebounds and two assists in 30 minutes off the bench. Junior forward
Jada Priebe also contributed nine points after hitting a trio of three-pointers while grabbing eight rebounds and one assist in 31 minutes.
Young Harris jumped on the Trojans early after a hot 7-0 start in the opening three minutes of the contest. Mount Olive would quickly find a way to respond after junior
Savannah McAfee and Priebe nailed three-balls, as the Trojans cut the deficit to 13-8. A late hot streak however by Annalise Malone of Young Harris extended the lead heading into the second quarter as she scored 13 of her game-high 33 points in the first quarter. The second quarter saw Young Harris stretch its lead by as many as 18 points as the Trojans made only their second field goal of the quarter with 3:50 to go following a three-pointer by Browne, 32-17. The Mountain Lions would finish the half off strong going into the break ahead by a 40-23 margin.
In the third quarter, Young Harris struggled out of the gates as the Trojans came out with a flurry of stops and scores to bring it back to a single-digit deficit of 46-37 with 4:46 left in the frame. Mount Olive would go on to outscore their opponent 18-10 in the quarter and bring the score to 50-41 for Young Harris heading into the final quarter. The fourth quarter brought along a hot start for the Mountain Lions as UMO found some struggles on the offensive end of the floor which led to Young Harris ending the game on a 16-3 run. The Trojans would see the score finish at 66-44 at the time of the final buzzer.
The Trojans ended the contest shooting 37.0 percent (17-of-46) from the field and went 8-of-26 (30.8 percent) from long range. Meanwhile, the Mountain Lions shot at a 43.1 percent clip (25-of-58) and were efficient from three-point range as they finished 7-of-19 (36.8 percent). Young Harris outscored Mount Olive 15-2 on second-chance points while outrebounding the Trojans, 39-23. Mount Olive mustered 21 points off the bench in the effort while adding 10 points in the paint.
Young Harris junior Annalise Malone finished with 33 points on 13-of-23 shooting including three-of-seven from downtown. Fellow junior Ivona Miljanic chipped in for 12 points, three rebounds and two assists in 31 minutes of action.
Mount Olive will welcome Barton in their final home game of the season this upcoming Wednesday, Feb.19 at Kornegay Arena with tip-off set for 5:00 p.m.
