JACKSON SPRINGS, N.C. (March 9) – After featuring four golfers in the top 15 on the individual leaderboard, the Trojans captured the team title by three strokes at the Laker Spring Break Shootout, which was hosted at the Foxfire Resort and Golf.
The University of Mount Olive men's golf team fired a score of one-under 575 (283-292) to collect their first tournament title since The Trojan in March 2023. The Trojans carded the lowest round of the event on the first day with five-under 283. Sand Hills CC placed second overall with a score of two-over 578 (292-286), while Livingstone rounded out the top three with a 13-over 589 (290-299).
Sophomore
Rasmus Ronnberg tied for first overall with five-under 139 (69-70) with eight birdies and 22 pars over two rounds of play. He lost the opening playoff hole to Ben Read after battling rainy conditions on Saturday. Ronnberg birdied the first holes during both rounds while also carding an eagle on the five-par fourth hole.
Fellow sophomore
Shawn Benson tied for sixth overall with an even-par 144 (70-74) behind eight birdies and 22 pars during the two-day event. He made a staggering six birdies in the opening round of play before converting 12 pars on Saturday. Sophomore
Matthew Richardson also placed among the top 10 after finishing in a tie for eighth overall with a one-over 145 (71-74). He carded an eagle, six birdies, and 22 pars for the Trojans.
Graduate student
Cade Hancock tied for 15th overall with a three-over 147 (73-74) with seven birdies and 19 pars. Sophomore
Max Lindblad carded a 13-over 157 (78-79) with one birdie and a team-leading 26 pars to tie for 36th in a field of nearly 70 competitors.
Sand Hills sophomore Ben Read earned individual medalist honors after tying for first with a five-under 139 (71-68). He went on a win the opening playoff hole versus Ronnberg to be crown champion.
Mount Olive returns to the course on April 8-9 at The Trojan, which will be hosted at Walnut Creek Country Club.
