LYNCHBURG, Va. (March 30) – Sophomore
Chianel Asoburuenwu set a pair of NCAA Provisional Standards on Saturday, as the Trojans claim four event wins while competing at the Hornet Open this weekend on the campus of the University of Lynchburg.
Asoburuenwu secured first place in the 100 meters after crossing the line in 11.65 seconds, which moves her into the top 10 in NCAA Division II in the event this season. Additionally, she claimed first place in the 200 meters with a time of 24.16 seconds to hit the NCAA standard for the first time this season in the event.
In the 400 meters, senior
Vinesha Briggs produced a first-place finish and improved her qualifying mark with a time of 56.81 seconds, which ranks first in the Conference Carolinas. Senior
Natalyah Wilson placed second overall after crossing the line with a time of 56.95, which sits second in the league this season.
Additionally, in the 200 meters, Briggs placed third overall and improved her mark with a time of 24.99 seconds, while freshman
Heavan Roberts finished fourth with a time of 25.03 seconds. Wilson placed fifth in the event with an improved time of 25.12 seconds, while junior
Lasira Nicholson qualified in the 200m after posting a time of 25.45 seconds to finish sixth overall.
Senior
Danielle Trimbur registered an event win in the javelin following a toss of 40.97 meters to improve her conference-leading mark. Freshman
MacKenna Gallon placed seventh in Virginia with a distance of 32.08 meters.
Junior
Karla Hormazabal finished second overall in the triple jump on Saturday with a distance of 11.63 meters, while senior
Kiana Hatchett improved her league mark with a leap of 11.09 meters to take third. Wilson also qualified in the high jump with a mark of 1.55 meters to finish fourth. Hormazabal qualified in the event after clearing 1.50 meters to place seventh.
Additionally, in the 100 meters, Nicholson placed second overall with a time of 12.08 seconds, which ranks sixth all-time at Mount Olive. Roberts finished fourth in the event after crossing the line in 12.22 seconds.
Junior
Adrienne Crawford took second place in the discus on Saturday after a toss of 40.87 meters, while freshman
Destiny Faison finished third overall with a mark of 38.36 meters.
Fellow junior
Katlyn Parrish placed third overall in the shot put with a distance of 12.18 meters.
Junior
Kiwanna Pemberton reached the qualifying standard in the 100-meter hurdles following a time of 15.73 seconds to place fifth.
In the hammer, Crawford placed second overall with a toss of 52.92 meters. Freshman
Elin Rydqvist improved her mark and placed third with a distance of 51.89 meters, which ranks fourth all-time at UMO.
Junior
Celine Fleurilus recorded a fourth-place finish in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:57.92.
The Trojans will return to action next weekend April 5-6 at the Bill Carson Invitational, which will be hosted on the campus of East Carolina.
