GREENWOOD, S.C. (March 26) – Behind nine different goal scorers on Tuesday afternoon, the Trojans surged past Lander by a final score of 18-10 on the road in a non-conference game.
With the win, the University of Mount Olive women's lacrosse team claims its fifth straight win and improves to 8-2 overall with an undefeated 4-0 mark on the road. The Trojans hold a perfect 3-0 record in the series with the Bearcats, while each side has scored double-digit goals in all three meetings. Meanwhile, Lander drops to 5-5 this season behind a 1-1 record against Conference Carolinas opponents.
The Bearcats scored the initial two goals of the contest in the first quarter before UMO countered with a pair of goals from sophomore
Maddy Fratus and junior
Teagan Dunnett to tie the contest at 2-2. In the closing minutes of the quarter, Lander regained the lead to take a 3-2 advantage following the opening 15 minutes. The Trojans quickly tied the game at the 12:30 mark of the second, as freshman
Kayanna Bowden scored off an assist by Dunnett. The Bearcats once again responded with a goal in just under a minute to hold a 4-3 lead before Mount Olive totaled five unanswered goals over the final nine-plus minutes of the quarter. UMO featured five different goal scorers, including a pair of free-position goals from Dunnett and freshman
Caroline Clark, to take an 8-4 edge into halftime.
Junior
Rileigh White joined the scoring sheet with a goal in the opening minute of the third before Lander registered four of the following five goals to cut the deficit to 10-8 with three-plus minutes left in the quarter. Senior
Logan Hibbard and fifth-year
Bria Hamilton found the back of the cage in the closing minutes to take a 12-8 advantage into the fourth. White once again netted an early goal at the 13:09 mark, but the Bearcats remained close following a goal less than a minute later, 13-9. The Trojans put the game out of reach with four straight goals in a four-plus minute stretch, as Hibbard and Bowden completed their hat tricks, while sophomore
Alexa Fitzgerald produced a pair of goals, 17-9. Lander tallied its final goal with 1:32 left before Dunnett finished her hat trick with 40 seconds remaining, 18-10.
Junior
Anna James earned the win and totaled five saves while playing 43-plus minutes. Senior
Jane Hobbs closed out the final 16:50 and collected five stops. Defensively, sophomore
Giavahna Gasdia caused six turnovers and grabbed five ground balls, while teammate
Madison Dow registered four caused turnovers against the Bearcats.
Mount Olive will return to Conference Carolinas action on Friday, March 29, when it travels to face Young Harris in a neutral site match on the campus of Newberry.
