LYNCHBURG, Va. (Dec. 6) – Freshman
Futoria Harris established a new Conference Carolinas and UMO record in the 60-meter dash, as the University of Mount Olive women's track & field program opened the 2024-25 indoor season at the Liberty Kickoff.
Harris set a new league and program record on Friday with a third-place finish in the 60-meter dash after crossing the line in 7.49 seconds. Her mark passes the previous record held by former Mount Olive sprinter Jaylin Reeves, who set a time of 7.52 seconds in 2023. In her first collegiate meet, Harris reached the NCAA provisional standard and conference qualifying mark in the event.
Additionally, Harris registered an NCAA mark in the 200-meter dash and posted the second-fastest mark in program history with a time of 24.60 seconds.
In the triple jump, a duo of Mount Olive student-athletes reached the NCAA provisional standard while competing in Virginia. Senior
Karla Hormazabal placed fourth overall in the event following a leap of 12.16 meters. Freshman
Janara Bryant made a stellar debut after hitting the second-best mark in UMO history with a distance of 11.87 meters to finish seventh in a field of 24 competitors.
Additionally, Hormazabal posted a league qualifying mark after leaping 5.61 meters in the long jump to finish fourth, which sits third all-time in program history. She also hit the conference standard in the high jump after clearing 1.55 meters, the sixth-best mark in UMO history.
In the 60-meter dash, three more Trojans reached the league mark in the event, as sophomore
Heavan Roberts crossed the line in 7.77 seconds, while senior
Lasira Nicholson and freshman
Sanyiah Shields recorded times of 7.88 seconds. Roberts also hit the conference qualifying standard in the 200 meters following the third-fastest time in program history at 25.12 seconds.
Junior
Keza Green set a pair of Conference Carolinas marks at the season-opening meet hosted by Liberty. She established the fifth-best mark at Mount Olive in the triple jump with a distance of 11.62 meters. Green also qualified following a leap of 5.18 meters in the long jump.
Also in the long jump, junior
Essence Slate finished fifth overall and posted a top-10 mark with a distance of 5.39 meters. Bryant qualified with a leap of 5.28 meters in the event and freshman
Joella Smith reached 5.11 meters.
In the 60-meter hurdles, junior
Channie Jefferson crossed the line in 9.07 seconds to hit the Conference Carolinas mark. Freshman
Zaria Washington also reached the qualifying standard with a time of 9.71 seconds. Additionally, Jefferson recorded the sixth-fastest time in the 200-meter dash at 25.53 seconds.
Mount Olive will continue the season-opening week at the JDL Early Bird Invite on Sunday, Dec. 8, hosted in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
