Applewhite captures weekly conference laurel

GREENVILLE, S.C. (Sept. 19) – After recording a brace against rival Barton over the weekend, University of Mount Olive sophomore Zachary Applewhite was named the Conference Carolinas Offensive Player of the Week by the league office on Tuesday morning.

A midfielder from Saint George in Barbados, Applewhite of Mount Olive finished with two goals in two matches last week.

He played all 90 minutes in Mount Olive's non-conference match with Catawba before scoring twice in a conference win over the Bulldogs. Applewhite scored first in the 41st minute off a rebound from his initial penalty kick attempt before sealing the match at the 83:58 mark with a goal on the counterattack.

As a freshman, Applewhite appeared in seven matches with five starts while playing over 300 minutes. He registered his first career goal on Saturday night and became the first UMO player with a two-goal match since recent graduate Roberto Hernandez achieved the feat in Oct. 2022 at Lees-McRae.

The Trojans return to the pitch today, Tuesday, Sept. 19, when it hosts Francis Marion in Conference Carolinas play, starting at 7 p.m.
