WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Feb. 19) – After featuring three individuals on the podium on Sunday, the University of Mount Olive women's track & field teams sit second overall following Day 1 of the Conference Carolinas Championships.
Mount Olive has tallied 41 points in the team standings at the conference championships with five events scored. UMO scored in three of the five events with a majority of its points coming in the weight throw, high jump, and long jump. UNC Pembroke ranks first in the standings with 49 points, while Converse rounds out the top three with 25 points.
In the weight throw, the Trojans featured three individuals among the top-eight scorers in the event. Senior
Mary Brigid Keck finished runner-up in the weight throw with a distance of 16.40 meters (53-9.75 feet) on her initial toss of the competition. Keck earns a position on the podium for the third-straight year in the event. Fellow senior
Kaliya Sutton placed fourth overall with a mark of 15.09 meters (49-6.25 feet), while junior
Rolanda Desir-Moreau finished fifth with a personal record of 14.96 meters (49-1.00 feet).
Freshman
Channie Jefferson reached the podium in third place in her debut at the league meet after posting a personal-best distance of 5.55 meters (18-2.50 feet) in the long jump. Senior
Mora Smith finished fourth overall with a mark of 5.46 meters (17-11.00 feet), while sophomore
Jamesha Howell scored in sixth place after recording a personal record of 5.42 meters (17-9.50 feet).
Sophomore
Natalyah Wilson secured second place in the high jump after a personal-best clearance of 1.58 meters (5-2.25 feet), while sophomore
Karla Hormazabal scored on a mark of 1.52 meters (4-11.75 feet) to take seventh overall in the event.
In the 60-meter dash, senior
Jaylin Reeves tied the school record after crossing the line in 7.56 seconds to set the top time in the preliminaries. Additionally, freshman
Chianel Asoburuenwu (7.71 seconds) and sophomore
Jamesha Howell (7.80 seconds) qualified for the finals in the 60 meters, which will take place tomorrow, Feb. 20, at 12:50 p.m.
Asoburuenwu and Reeves also qualified for the finals in the 200 meters after setting the top two times in the prelims. Asoburuenwu sets a personal record after crossing the line in 25.39 seconds to establish the top mark on Day 1. Reeves finished second overall with a blistering pace of 25.68 seconds. Jaiden Moody registered the fourth-best time at 25.83 seconds to qualify for the finals.
The 400 meters finals will feature a trio of Trojans after Jefferson, Moody, and sophomore
Vinesha Briggs all placed in the top eight. Jefferson shattered her personal record after crossing the line in 58.41 seconds. Moody finished fourth with a mark of 59.16 seconds, while Briggs put down a personal-best time of 59.70 seconds to reach the finals.
Junior
Tylyia Triggs will compete in the 60-meter hurdles finals after recording the third-best time in the prelims with a mark of 9.33 seconds.
Mount Olive returns to action at the Conference Carolinas Championships tomorrow, Monday, Feb. 20, with events starting at 10:30 a.m.
