No. 4 UMO defeats No. 10 Newberry in ranked matchup, 4-2

Congleton scores two goals; Mount Olive earns its second win over a ranked opponent this season

MOUNT OLIVE (Oct. 18) – In a midweek top-10 nationally ranked contest, the No. 4 Trojans beat No. 10 Newberry by a 4-2 margin in South Atlantic Conference (SAC) play on Wednesday afternoon at Ray McDonald Sr. Sports Complex.

With the win, the University of Mount Olive field hockey team improves to 13-1 overall with a 12-0 record in the SAC and earned the season sweep over Newberry. The Trojans also made its first-ever appearance in the Division II regional rankings, released this afternoon. Meanwhile, the Wolves fall to 12-2 overall and 9-2 in conference play with both losses coming against UMO.

In the opening seconds of the match, Mount Olive was rewarded a penalty corner. With a perfect insert by senior Avery Congleton, junior Annefleur Moerkerken scored the opening goal just 27 seconds into the match, 1-0. A few minutes later, Newberry scored the equalizer at the 9:57 mark, to end the first quarter, 1-1. Just 51 seconds into the second quarter, Jinte Steenbeeke found senior Avery Congleton to take the lead, 2-1. Newberry tested the UMO defense but could not score in the remainder of the first half. 

At the start of the second half, both teams fought aggressively to gain possession for another scoring opportunity. At the 40:22 mark, sophomore Nikki Bos saw freshman Jemimah Kriechelberg to extend the lead by two, 3-1. Nearing the end of the third quarter, senior Alisia Lovejoy passed a through ball, finding her teammate, Bos deflected it toward the cage, and Congleton sealed the sequence with a goal, 4-1. Late in the final quarter, the Wolves scored, but it was not enough to earn the win, as the Trojans sealed the 4-2 victory.

Senior goalkeeper Alanna Barrett earned the win with six saves in a full 60 minutes of play.

Although Mount Olive was outshot 16-9 and fell behind a 12-9 deficit in penalty corners, the Trojans were able to capitalize on their opportunities to earn the series sweep over the Wolves. 

UMO travels to Gaffney, South Carolina, to face Limestone in its last road game of the season on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 11:00 a.m.
