WINGATE, N.C. (Oct. 10) – No. 5 UMO defeats Wingate by a 6-1 margin on Tuesday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference (SAC) play. The Trojans swept the Bulldogs this season, after winning the first matchup in September.
With the win, the University of Mount Olive field hockey team improves to 11-1 overall and 10-0 in SAC. This win marks the first top-five nationally-ranked win in program history. Meanwhile, Wingate falls to 3-9 overall and 3-7 in conference play.
UMO took control of the match as they scored within the first 45 seconds of the match. After controlling the ball off the rebound, sophomore
Nikki Bos scored the first goal, 1-0. With 3:29 on the clock, junior
Amber Dercksen found the back of the cage to stretch the lead, 2-0. Closing the first quarter, the Bulldogs scored their first goal off a penalty corner opportunity, 2-1. In the second quarter, Mount Olive saw two shots but both teams remained scoreless.
At the start of the second half, the Trojans exploded into action as they saw three goals in the third quarter. At the 12:34 mark, Dercksen crossed the ball to senior
Avery Congleton to put one past the keeper, 3-1. Shortly after the duo of Dercksen and Congleton found themselves in a scoring opportunity. With a great pass by Congleton, Dercksen scored her second goal of the match, 4-1. Closing the third quarter, Bos scored her second goal, taking a shot toward the back left corner of the cage, 5-1. McKenzie Conroy found Dercksen to complete her hat trick, and seal the 6-1 win for the Trojans.

UMO out-shot WU 21-5 and held an 8-5 edge in penalty corners.
