Ma'kira Settle won the women's high jump and University of Mount Olive earned top three finishes in 13 of 16 scored events as the Trojans won the 2015 Conference Carolinas Women's Indoor Track and Field Championship Sunday at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C. The women's indoor conference title is the second in a row for Mount Olive. The Trojans also captured their second straight men's indoor track and field conference championship Sunday.
Settle tied for the top height with 1.60 meters, but was awarded first place by achieving the mark in her first attempt. She matched the school record set last year by Chelsea van Dijk, who finished third in the 400 meters and was the anchor for the Trojans' quartet that finished second in the 4x400 meter relay. Alexis McNeil, Ashley Jansen and Bailee Henry comprised the rest of the relay team. Jansen and Henry also joined Danielle Heymach and Julia Bridges in a third place finish in the distance medley.
Aerostata Brown competed in track and field events, finishing second in the triple jump, third in the long jump and fourth in the 60 meter dash. Kelsey Valentine earned third place finishes in the 3000 meters and 5000 meters, and placed fourth in the mile run. Henry finished second in the 800 meters and the mile run, while McNeil placed third in the 200 meter dash. McNeil also posted the fastest 60 meter time during preliminaries, breaking her own school record with a time of 7.74 seconds. She finished sixth in the finals.
In throwing events, Nichole Poppe finished second in the weight throw and Char'De Washington was third in the shot put.
Mount Olive finished with 157 points to beat out second place Limestone (109 points) and third place King (107) points.
