Box Score Mount Olive stood toe to toe with Conference Carolinas co-leader Queens for 63 minutes, but the visitors pulled away late for a 5-1 men's soccer decision Wednesday afternoon at Amon Field. Trojan sophomore Emmanuel Wennah scored his first goal of the season to pull his team even in the waning moments of the first half, but the Royals' attack was too much.
Mount Olive (2-6-1 overall, 2-2-1 CC) never led after the Royals' Kevin Anderson scored his fourth goal of the season by threading a shot between a mass of players in front of the goal in the 21st minute.
The Trojans stayed close behind the goalkeeping of freshman Nick Bernsdorf. Bernsdorf denied a breakaway one-on-one opportunity by Yannick Fischback in the 36th minute, then caught a break when Jeremy Chambers hit the post on a wide open shot 12 minutes later.
The Trojans had their opportunities too. Royal keeper Montrell Morgan made a sprawling save on a Wennah shot with less than five minutes left before intermission. In the 44th minute, Wennah got another chance and put it in the net. Alex Rodriguez' header led Wennah to the right corner of the goal for the equalizer heading into the break.
After intermission, Mount Olive's good chances came few and far between. Morgan came up with three saves in the period, but most of them came early in the period and late. It was in between that Queens took command.
Erick Suares delivered the tie-breaker in the 63rd minute, and the Royals (5-3, 3-0) scored again two minutes later on a breakaway by Thiago Andrade. The Royals added two more markers in the final seven minutes.
Mount Olive returns to action Saturday when the Trojans travel to North Greenville for a 3 p.m. contest. The women's match will start at noon.
