Box Score Mount Olive junior Mike Mercurio singled home Bryan Dunlavey with one out in the bottom of the 10th as the nationally top-ranked Trojans advanced in the winner's bracket with a 5-4 come-from-behind win over Pfeiffer in the second round of the Conference Carolinas Baseball Tournament Friday afternoon in Wilson, N.C. The rally made a winner of Chris Hinton (5-0) who tossed 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief.
The Trojans take on No. 5 seed North Greenvile Saturday at 11 a.m. in a match-up of the two remaining tournament unbeaten teams. Live Video and Live Stats are available for the game.
Pfeiffer (25-25) led twice thanks to a pair of two-run homers by Kevin Price. The second blast put the Falcons ahead 4-3 in the top of the seventh. The lead did not last. In the bottom of the seventh, the Trojans (40-7) pulled even when Geno Escalante was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a wild throw, then scored on a single by Braden Reitano.
Hinton, who took over for starter Zach Smith in the top of the seventh kept the Falcons in check the rest of the way, scattering three hits and striking out two.
Mount Olive stranded runners in scoring position in both the eighth and ninth innings before Mercurio sent Pfeiffer home with its second loss in the tournament.
Mercurio's hit chased home Dunlavey, who walked off Falcon reliever Eric Shuford (1-7) with one out. Tyler Summers took over for Shuford on the mound, but gave up a single to Will Bynum to put runners on the corners for the all-conference shortstop. Mercurio drove a 2-2 pitch through the middle to end the game.
"I wanted to get the ball to the outfield, but after I got two strikes, I was just trying to put the ball in play. I was actually trying to go to right field, but I was able to drive one up the middle," Mercurio said.
An RBI-groundout by junior Matt Patrone gave the Trojans their first lead in the bottom of the second. Later, the Trojans held a 3-2 lead after RBI-singles by Reitano and Dunlavey. Price's homers erased both leads.
Smith took a no-hitter into the fifth inning for the Trojans until Price spoiled the bid with his first homer with two outs in the frame. Smith gave up five hits and two earned runs, striking out four.
The Trojans were able to tie the game at 4-4 and force extra innings with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by junior Jermaine Berry in the home half of the seventh.
Mount Olive left 11 runners on base in regulation while Pfeiffer stranded nine.
Junior catcher Geno Escalante extended his Mount Olive school-record hit streak to 39 games with a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth.
