Women's Basketball Drops Opener At Newberry, 67-65

Box Score

Junior guard Andrea Jones scored a team-high 21 points, but host Newberry outscored Mount Olive 5-1 in the final minute to rally for a 67-65 decision in the season-opener for both teams Sunday afternoon.

Mount Olive (0-1) took its final lead of the contest on a Jones lay-up, then a tip-in with 1:07 left. Both baskets came after steals, one by Tamara Nesmith and another by Kristin Mobley.

Junior guard Kendra Brown (13 points, five rebounds) responded, however, with a steal and lay-up to tie the game, 64-64. Then Keisha Henderson hit a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left to put Newberry (0-1) ahead for good. A Henderson steal gave Brown the chance to put the game away, but Brown made just one-of-two free throws with nine seconds left, giving the Trojans one more chance.

The Wolves fouled Joneiqua Gary before she could launch a tying three-point attempt. With less than a second left, Gary made a free throw, then intentionally missed the second. The Trojans were unable to corral the rebound before time expired.

Jasmine McDonald joined Jones in double-figures for Mount Olive, as the sophomore had 16 points, 10 rebounds and five steals.

Mount Olive led by three at halftime, then stretched the cushion to nine, 43-34, on a Jones jumper with 14:36 remaining. But foul trouble and turnovers started to hurt the Trojans. After Jones' basket, the Wolves turned three consecutive Trojan turnovers into lay-ups. Brown made a pair of free throws, then hit the Wolves' only three-pointer of the game to cut the lead to 52-51.

Newberry struggled from both three-point range and the free throw line throughout. The Wolves were 1-for-12 from long range, and 16-31 from the charity stripe.

Mount Olive's biggest problem was foul trouble. The Trojans were whistled for 28 fouls. Nesmith and Alyssa Luebs fouled out in the final four minutes. At intermission, six Trojans had at least two fouls.

Causing most of the trouble were Wolves Haylee Lepaio (25 points) and Neicy Lewis (16), who combined with Brown to account for 54 of Newberry's 67 points.

Gary finished with five assists for the Trojans.

The Trojans return to action Wednesday night, when Mount Olive hosts Virginia State beginning at 6 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
