WINSTON-SALEM - The University of Mount Olive women's basketball team continues to battle through a non-conference stretch, falling 86–50 on the road to Winston-Salem State Saturday afternoon at the C.E. Gaines Center.
Despite facing the CIAA-leading Rams, Mount Olive showed flashes of resilience throughout the contest, particularly on the offensive end. The Trojans finished the game shooting 39.2 percent from the field and from three-point range at 33.3 percent.
Jayla Hicks led Mount Olive with a team-high nine points, adding three assists and three steals while consistently pushing the tempo.
Aniyah Vanhook provided a spark off the bench, contributing eight points, while
Destiny Thompson added eight points on an efficient 3-for-4 shooting performance.
Kayla Jackson chipped in five points and a team-best five rebounds, helping anchor the Trojans on the glass.
Mount Olive stayed competitive early, briefly taking the lead in the opening quarter before Winston-Salem State used its depth and transition scoring to pull ahead. The Trojans responded in the second quarter with a 7–0 run, highlighted by perimeter shooting and strong ball movement, trimming the deficit and showing improved offensive rhythm.
In the second half, Mount Olive continued to fight, scoring 16 points in the fourth quarter and knocking down timely shots from beyond the arc. The Trojans also saw balanced production from their bench, which accounted for 28 of the team's 50 points.
Mount Olive will look to build on its defensive effort and bench production as it returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 31 against Elizabeth City State at noon.
