Box Score MOUNT OLIVE - The Mount Olive women's flag football team began a new chapter in program history on Saturday, earning the first win of the inaugural season with a 20–7 victory at home over the North Carolina Central Eagles.
Mount Olive wasted no time making history, as Jaylianie Lucas connected with Xamiarah Rawls on a scoring pass to open the game and give the Trojans an early 6–0 lead. The momentum continued later in the first quarter when
Evelisse Martinez brought down an NCCU rusher in the end zone for a safety, pushing the advantage to 8–0 after one quarter of play.
The Trojans added to their lead just before halftime when Saundra Funderburk found the end zone on a rushing score with 13 seconds remaining in the second quarter, sending Mount Olive into the break ahead 14–0.
North Carolina Central responded with its only touchdown of the game in the third quarter, trimming the deficit to 14–7. However, Mount Olive sealed the win in the fourth quarter when Maiya George scored on a direct snap run to cap the scoring and
secure the historic victory.
The win marks the first in program history and officially launches the Mount Olive flag football era under head coach Derrick Lucas.
Mount Olive will look to build on the momentum in its next matchup against Barton Bulldogs Flag Football on Friday, March 6, in Wilson. First play is set for 7:30 p.m.
