Lucas Throws Seven Touchdowns as Trojans Surge Past Chowan, 52-18

MURFREESBORO – The University of Mount Olive women's flag football team delivered its most explosive offensive performance of the season Monday afternoon, rolling past Chowan, 52-18.

After falling behind 12-0 early in the first quarter, the Trojans responded in dominant fashion, outscoring the Hawks 52-6 the rest of the way to secure the convincing victory.

Leading the charge was quarterback Jaylianie Lucas, who turned in a record-setting performance. Lucas completed 28-of-46 passes for 283 yards and a remarkable seven touchdowns, spreading the ball efficiently across the offense. Her longest completion of the day went for 66 yards to Saundra Funderburk, highlighting a high-powered aerial attack that proved too much for Chowan to contain.

Funderburk was equally electric, showcasing her versatility in both the passing and rushing game. She rushed for 71 yards on just three attempts, including a 61-yard touchdown run that sparked Mount Olive's momentum shift in the first quarter. Through the air, she added five receptions for 75 yards, including the 66-yard score, and finished with three total touchdowns (one rushing, two receiving).

Mount Olive's offense found its rhythm in the second quarter, erupting for 27 points behind four touchdown passes from Lucas. The Trojans continued to build their lead in the second half, adding two more scores in the third quarter before closing out the game with a final touchdown in the fourth.

In total, five different receivers hauled in touchdown passes from Lucas, showcasing the depth of the Trojans' offensive unit.

Defensively, Mount Olive came up with timely stops to shift momentum, holding Chowan to just one score over the final three quarters after an early deficit. Kris'Shyia McKoy and Maiya George led the way with six tackles apiece, while George and Kaliayah Brown each added two sacks. George totaled five tackles for loss, with Brown contributing three, as the Trojans consistently disrupted the backfield. Zamarah Rawls paced the secondary with two interceptions, returning them for 12 yards. In all, four Trojans recorded at least four tackles, while six finished with three or more, highlighting a balanced defensive effort

The 52 points mark the most scored by the Trojans this season and surpass their previous high of 42 points in a 42-13 win over Chowan earlier this season on March 24.

Mount Olive returns home on Thursday for its regular season finale, hosting Barton for Senior Day. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. as the Trojans look to carry their momentum into the postseason.
