GREENVILLE, S.C. (June 9) – For the seventh time in program history, the University of Mount Olive women's track & field team earned the Spring Scholar-Athlete of the Year presented by Hudl, as senior
Karla Hormazabal received the accolade from the league office.
The Scholar-Athlete awards Presented by Hudl are awarded annually to one individual in each Conference Carolinas sponsored sport. The Scholar-Athlete of the Year winners are chosen by the Conference Carolinas Student-Athlete Affairs and Awards Committee. To be considered, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.25 or higher. In addition, the nominees for the award must have been named all-conference in their sport and also chosen academic all-conference.
Hormazabal secured Second-Team All-American honors in the final collegiate meet with the Trojans. She produced a personal-best distance of 12.60 meters on her final attempt to capture 11th place at the NCAA Division II National Championships. Hormazabal boasted the ninth-best mark in the country and was a USTFCCCA All-Region recipient in the triple jump. She finished as the runner-up in the event at the Conference Carolinas Championship and was a member of the league championship team.
A native of Orlando, Florida, Hormazabal maintained a 3.54 GPA while earning a bachelor's degree in exercise science. She becomes the sixth different Mount Olive women's track & field athlete to receive the honor.
