MOUNT OLIVE (April 25) – Following a dominant second-half performance on Friday night, the University of Mount Olive women's lacrosse program advanced to the Conference Carolinas Championship with a 21-5 win over Emmanuel in the semifinals at the Ray McDonald Sr. Sports Complex.
Records: #2 seed Trojans (10-7), #6 Emmanuel (9-8)
Next Up: Mount Olive will face top-seed Belmont Abbey in the title game on Sunday, April 27, at noon.
TROJAN PERFORMANCES:
- Sophomore Katie Broom posted a career-best seven-point performance with four goals, three assists, and two caused turnovers.
- Fellow sophomore Kayanna Bowden set a career high with six points behind three goals and three assists while adding two ground balls, two caused turnovers, and one draw control.
- Fifth-year Logan Hibbard finished with six points after scoring four goals and tallying two assists against the Lions. Additionally, she registered three draw controls, three caused turnovers, and one ground ball.
- Senior Lena DeFilippo produced a five-point performance with four goals and one assist.
- Senior goalkeeper Anna James collected eight saves on 16 shots faced in 43-plus minutes in the cage.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Emmanuel established a 1-0 advantage at the 8:30 mark before the Trojans countered with back-to-back goals from Bowden and junior Maddy Fratus. The Lions tie the contest at 2-2 with 6:19 remaining before Mount Olive scored three unanswered goals to take a 5-2 lead.
- Hibbard stretched the lead to 6-2 in the opening minutes of the second quarter before the sides traded the next four goals. Broom recorded man-down goal at the 4:02 mark and Hibbard added another goal to take a 10-4 edge into the break.
- The Lions netted the initial goal of the third to trail 10-5, but the Trojans scored 11-straight goals to close out the game. Mount Olive scored seven times in the third, highlighted by three goals by Broom, while DeFilippo scored a pair in the fourth.
