MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (April 24) – Graduate student
Dominic Nutter secured the individual crown in the hammer throw on Thursday, as the University of Mount Olive men's track & field program competed on the opening day of the Conference Carolinas Outdoor Championships.
Following the competition of 2-of-21 events, the Trojans sit second overall with 24 total points, just one point off the lead. UNC Pembroke holds the top spot in the team standings with 25 points while North Greenville rounds out the top three with 11 points.
In the hammer throw, Mount Olive featured five individuals in the top-eight scoring positions to capture 24 of the possible 39 points in the event. Nutter claimed the individual crown following a meet record toss of 61.89 meters to place first, while also setting the sixth-best mark in NCAA Division II. Junior
Tyrese Lavender finished third overall with a career-best distance of 52.26 meters to reach the podium. Sophomore
Matthew Heywood registered a fifth-place finish with a mark of 49.97 meters while senior
Nicholas Cloud placed sixth with a career-best toss of 47.20 meters. Sophomore
Adam Turner rounded out the individual scorers with an eighth-place finish following a mark of 45.46 meters.
Junior
Jason Hart placed first overall in the 200 meter prelims after crossing the line in 21.18 seconds, which matched a season-best time. He qualified for the final alongside freshman
Jacoby Pevia, who set a time of 21.66 to finish seventh overall. The 200m finals are set for Saturday, April 26 at 1:15 p.m.
In the 1500 meters prelims, senior
Riley Willcox qualified for the finals after placing fifth overall with a time of 4:01.26. The finals for the 1500m are set for Saturday, April 26 at 11:25 a.m.
Mount Olive returns to action at the Conference Carolinas Championships on Friday, April 25, with events starting at 11:15 a.m.
