NINETY SIX, S.C. (March 4) – Competing in their third event of the spring campaign, the Trojans placed 12th overall in the team standings on Tuesday while competing at the Bearcat Classic hosted at The Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor.
The University of Mount Olive men's golf program carded a 34-over 898 (299-296-303) in a field of nearly 20 teams, including four ranked among the top 20 in NCAA Division II. No. 16 Wingate won the tournament title by four strokes after firing an impressive 17-under 847 (287-276-284) while featuring the individual champion. No. 5 ranked Grand Valley State placed second overall with a final score of 13-under 851 (285-288-278) and No. 11 USC Aiken finished third after shooting six-under 858 (290-289-279).
Junior Max Lindblad tied for 34th overall with a score of five-over 221 (77-72-72) and climbed 14 spots on the individual leaderboard on the final day. He carded back-to-back even par rounds while totaling eight birdies and a team-best 35 pars.
Freshman Oscar Lönnqvist carded an eight-over 224 (72-74-78) to tie for 47th place in his second event of the spring. He delivered an outstanding even-par 72 in the first round with four birdies while competing in South Carolina. He finished the two-day event with nine birdies and 32 pars.
Senior Edvin Perman tied for 62nd overall after shooting 12-over 228 (75-77-76) with eight birdies and 26 pars. Junior Matthew Richardson fired a 16-over 232 (82-73-77) with a team-best 10 birdies and 22 pars to tie for 81st on the leaderboard. Senior Caleb Tatum made his collegiate debut with the program and shot a 22-over 238 (75-80-83) to tie for 96th while converting four birdies and 31 pars.
Wingate graduate student Jordan Hyland delivered the tournament-best individual performance, shooting an 11-under 205 (69-67-69) behind 15 birdies and an eagle to earn medalist honors.
Mount Olive returns to action next week at the Barton Intercollegiate on March 10-11 at the Wilson Country Club, looking to build on its experience from Bearcat Classic.
