ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. (Feb. 11) – In a highly competitive tournament featuring multiple top-ranked programs, the University of Mount Olive men's golf team placed 16th overall at The Spring Kickoff Intercollegiate, hosted by Lincoln Memorial.
The Trojans finished 16th in the team standings with a score of 38-over 902 (298-300-304) in a field that featured six programs in the top-25 in the NCAA Division II. The host Railsplitters captured the tournament title by five strokes with an impressive 14-under 850 (287-275-288) with two golfers placing inside the top-five. Wingate tied for second with a score of nine-under 855 (287-281-287) while Columbus State also finished nine-under 855 (287-279-289).
Junior
Shawn Benson tied for 51st overall in a field of 100 golfers after shooting nine-over 225 (76-72-77) with seven birdies, including a pair of par-five 12th. He also added 31 pars over three rounds of play in the first tournament of the spring.
Freshman
Oscar Lönnqvist climbed seven positions on the final day to tie for 63rd while competing at the St. Johns Golf & Country Club. He carded a score of 12-over 228 (72-81-75) with a team-best 33 pars made while dropping five birdies at the two-day event. Fellow freshman
Lavrans Broen Holm jumped 15 spots on the leaderboard to tie for 67th overall on Tuesday. He shot a final score of 13-over 229 (74-82-73) with a team-leading nine birdies, including a trio on the par-five second hole.
Senior
Gabriel Ekholm also tied for 67th after carding a 13-over 229 (77-73-79) with a team-leading 37 pars and three birdies. Sophomore
Jonas Arnstrom Bakker rounded out the team following a score of 16-over 232 (76-74-82) to tie for 81st overall with 32 pars and six birdies.
Georgia Southwestern senior Felipe Gomez claimed the individual medalist honors with an 11-under 205 (69-69-67) behind 14 birdies.
Mount Olive will be idle for two weeks before competing at the Spring Bulldog Clash hosted by Barton on Feb. 24-25 in Pawleys Island, South Carolina.
