HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FL (Sept. 17) – Junior
Matthew Richardson tied for 10th overall in a stellar performance in the first event of the fall, as the Trojans finished eighth in the team standings at the Griffin Invitational hosted by Saint Leo.
The University of Mount Olive men's golf program placed eighth overall at the season-opening event with a 36-over 888 (297-297-294) behind a pair of golfers in the top 25 overall. Palm Beach Atlantic won the tournament by four strokes with a score of 13-over 865 (291-289-285) as a trio of individuals in the top 12 on the leaderboard. The host Lions finished second in the field with a 17-over 869 (285-290-294), while Eckerd placed third overall with an 18-over 870 (292-287-291).
Richardson carded a three-over 216 (70-75-71) and tied for 10th overall after climbing three positions during the final round of the event. He totaled seven birdies, 34 pars, and an eagle on the par-five fifth holes. Richardson shot an impressive one-under 70 during the opening round with five birdies at the Mission Inn Resort.
Freshman
Oscar Lönnqvist tied for 23rd place in a field of nearly 70 golfers with a score of eight-over 221 (74-73-74) behind four birdies and a team-high 39 pars over three rounds played. Junior
Shawn Benson fired an 11-over 224 (76-74-74) to finish in a tie for 34th overall with a team-high nine birdies and 30 pars in the first fall event. Freshman
Lavrans Broen Holm jumped five positions during the final round to tie for 43rd place with a 14-over 227 (77-75-75) after shooting five birdies and 33 pars. Senior
Gabriel Ekholm rounded out the team in a tie for 49th with a 16-over 229 (77-75-77) after collecting seven birdies and 27 pars.
Eckerd freshman Reggie Fear cruised to medalist honors by six strokes with an eight-under 205 (68-70-67) with 15 birdies over three rounds.
The Trojans return to the course next week to compete at the 14th Annual Jay Jennison Cup on Sept. 23-24 in St. Augustine, Florida.
