MOUNT OLIVE (April 13) – Behind a single-game team record in goals, the Trojans cruised past Lees-McRae on Senior Day by a 28-2 margin in Conference Carolinas play at Ray McDonald Sr. Sports Complex.
With the win, the University of Mount Olive women's lacrosse team secures a fourth consecutive win to improve to 13-3 overall behind a perfect 8-0 mark in conference action. The Trojans earned the No. 1 seed in the Conference Carolinas Tournament, which will be hosted in Mount Olive. Additionally, UMO can earn the outright regular season title this week with a win over Converse. Meanwhile, Lees-McRae drops to 0-11 this season with a 0-8 record in league play.
Offensively, the Trojans featured 13 different goal scorers to eclipse the scoring record with 28 goals on Saturday afternoon. Senior
Logan Hibbard led the team with a seven-point performance behind four goals and three assists while adding seven draw controls, three caused turnovers, and three ground balls. Junior
Lena DeFilippo finished with a team-high five goals while fifth-year
Bria Hamilton and sophomore
Hailey Morgan each recorded a four-point game. Additionally, senior
Maia Hodgins and freshman
Caroline Clark registered hat tricks against the Bobcats.
Following an opening goal by Lees-McRae, UMO tallied seven unanswered goals, including two goals and two assists by Hibbard to hold a 7-1 lead. The Bobcats scored in the closing seconds of the first quarter before Mount Olive racked up nine straight goals in the second to build a 16-2 advantage. During those 15 minutes, Hibbard and DeFilippo each completed their first-half hat trick while four other players found the back of the cage.
With the clock running the entire second half, the Trojans put 12 insurance goals past the Bobcat keeper to earn a 28-2 win.
Defensively, sophomore
Giavahna Gasdia paced the team with four caused turnovers while adding four ground balls. Freshman
Kayanna Bowden led the team with 10 draw controls and recorded two caused turnovers on Saturday. Senior goalie
Jane Hobbs secured the victory after playing all 60 minutes in the cage.
Mount Olive finished with a 38-4 shot advantage over the Bobcats while collecting 23 draw controls.
The Trojans will return to Conference Carolinas play on Wednesday, April 17, to face Converse on the road at 4:30 p.m.
