Mount Olive collects three event wins at Hornet Open

LYNCHBURG, Va. (March 30) – The University of Mount Olive men's track & field program reached the podium multiple times, including three event victories, while competing at the Hornet Open hosted by the University of Lynchburg this weekend.

Freshman Sigursteinn Asgeirsson claimed the event win in the shot put with a distance of 15.62 meters on Saturday and continues to boast the top mark in the Conference Carolinas this season. Junior Nicholas Cloud finished runner-up in a field of over 30 competitors with a season-best mark of 15.36 meters.

Junior Brian Saul locked down a victory in the 400 meters while competing in Virginia. He posted a time of 49.29 seconds to clinch the individual crown.

In the hammer throw, senior Dorian Tolbert secured the event title with a toss of 55.27 meters on his final attempt of the day and continues to hold the top spot in the Conference Carolinas. Fellow senior Alex Smith-Fort'e registered a season-best mark of 54.08 meters to place second overall, while junior Israel Long finished fourth with a distance of 48.83 meters. Junior Micah Harrison rounded out the group with a career-best mark of 48.56 meters on Saturday to finish sixth.

Sophomore Jason Hart posted a second-place finish in the 200 meters after crossing the line in 21.49 seconds. The mark ranks second in the Conference Carolinas this year and sits fourth all-time in UMO history. Saul finished seventh and improved his league qualifying time with a mark of 22.03 seconds. Junior Christopher Kirksey hit the conference standard in the 400m with a time of 22.09 seconds and placed eighth.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Hart, freshman Timothy Richardson, Saul, and Kirksey finished second overall and registered the second-best time in the conference with a mark of 41.94 seconds.

Junior Riley Willcox improved his league qualifying time in the 1500 meters after placing fifth with a time of 3:59.31.

In the long jump, freshman Zacharie Fedelus placed second overall with a distance of 6.94 meters, which ties for eighth all-time in program history. Kirksey reached the conference standard and finished fourth with a mark of 6.57 meters.

Sophomore Kavon Poindexter and senior Kamden Johnson each tied for second place in the high jump after clearing 1.93 meters. Both athletes remain in the top five in the Conference Carolinas this season in the event.

Smith-Fort'e improved his conference standard in the discus and placed fourth with a distance of 44.89 meters, which ranks second in the league this season. Sophomore Tyrese Lavender took fifth place with a toss of 44.37 meters on Saturday.

The Trojans will return to action next weekend April 5-6 at the Bill Carson Invitational, which will be hosted on the campus of East Carolina.
