VIRGINIA BEACH (Feb. 11) – In their preparation ahead of the Conference Carolinas Championship, the Trojans posted seven podium finishes while competing at the DIII Pre-Nationals Invitational, hosted by Norfolk State.
Senior
Alex Smith-Fort'e reached the NCAA Provisional Standard for a fourth consecutive week and placed second overall with a toss of 18.82 meters (61-9.00 feet) on his fourth attempt. He enters the indoor league championship with the top distance in the Southeast Region and the Conference Carolinas.
Additionally, in the weight throw, junior
Israel Long posted a season-best mark with a distance of 16.48 meters (54-1.00 feet) to finish third overall and climb into the top three in the league this year in the event. Senior
Dorian Tolbert placed fourth with a toss of 16.36 meters (53-8.25 feet) while junior
Micah Harrison registered a sixth-place finish with a mark of 15.71 meters (51-6.50 feet).
Sophomore
Kavon Poindexter recorded a personal-best mark of 1.90 meters (6-2.75 feet) to finish second in the high jump, while sophomore
Josh Manning placed third after clearing 1.85 meters (6-0.75 feet) on Saturday. In the long jump, Poindexter produced a fifth-place finish with a distance of 12.81 meters (42-0.50 feet) and Manning placed sixth with a mark of 12.64 meters (41-5.75 feet).
In the shot put, freshman
Sigursteinn Asgeirsson finished second overall with a toss of 15.64 meters (51-3.75 feet) and will enter the league championships with the top mark in the event. Junior
Nicholas Cloud registered a third-place finish with a mark of 14.86 meters (48-9.00 feet) while freshman
Adam Turner reached the league qualifying mark with a toss of 13.03 meters (42-9.00 feet).
Senior
Nathanael Bierly delivered a fourth-place finish in the mile with a season-best time of 4:41.62 while also placing fifth in the 800 meters after crossing the line with a time of 2:01.50.
The Trojans return to action next weekend on Feb. 18-19 at the Conference Carolinas Championships in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, at the JDL Fast Track.
