Boone, N.C. (Dec. 7) – Sophomore
Sigursteinn Asgeirsson captured an event title in the shot put, as the University of Mount Olive men's track & field program posted 12 Conference Carolinas qualifying marks at the John Weaver Invitational hosted by App State.
Asgeirsson recorded a first-place finish in the shot put following a toss of 15.70 meters, which hit the league qualifying standard. Mount Olive also featured four additional qualifiers in the season-opening week for the program. Senior
Nicholas Cloud placed second overall with a distance of 15.38 meters, while freshman
Amari Noble finished third with a mark of 14.16 meters, which ranks eighth all-time at UMO. Freshman Caleb Bass registered a top-10 toss in the event with a mark of 13.48 meters to place fifth. Junior
Micah Harrison posted a distance of 13.33 meters to finish eighth at the two-day event.
In the weight throw, sophomore
Matthew Heywood earned a second-place finish with a career-best toss of 15.99 meters, which sits eighth all-time at Mount Olive. Harrison placed third overall and qualified with a distance of 15.94 meters. Junior
Tyrese Lavender finished fifth in the event following a mark of 15.49 meters. Sophomore
Adam Turner posted a career-best of 15.35 meters to place sixth overall, while Noble qualified with a toss of 14.89 meters to earn a seventh-place finish. Bass rounded out the group of qualifiers to finish eighth with a mark of 14.39 meters.
Mount Olive returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, Dec. 8, at the JDL Early Bird Invite hosted in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
