MOUNT OLIVE (Oct. 26) – The senior class for the Trojans combined for 43-of-47 kills on Saturday, as the University of Mount Olive women's volleyball program extended their winning streak with a 3-0 sweep over Chowan at Kornegay Arena in Conference Carolinas divisional action.
With the win, the Trojans captured a ninth consecutive victory to improve to 14-6 this season behind an 11-2 record in league play. Mount Olive has won 11 of the last 13 meetings against Chowan and continues to push for the top seed in the KPI rankings. Meanwhile, the Hawks fall to 4-17 overall with a 2-12 record in conference action.
Senior
Breanna Reisinger registered a game-high 12 kills on a .364 hitting percentage with one block and two digs. Fellow senior
Kate Carter reached double-digit kills with 10 on a .500 clip with four blocks, while senior
Callie Mullins totaled eight kills, two blocks, and three digs. Senior
Ashlyn Stone finished with seven kills, 13 assists, two aces, three blocks, and seven digs. Senior
Karoline Cox delivered six kills, three service aces, two blocks, and five digs. Junior
Breanna Tanton directed the offense with 26 assists and eight digs.
Mount Olive established an early 11-7 lead in the opening set before Chowan countered with four of the following five points to close the gap to 12-11. The Trojans answered with an 11-1 run that included a trio of kills from Carter to take a significant 23-12 advantage. Mount Olive ultimately secured the opening set by a 25-15 margin following a service error.
The Trojans jumped ahead by a score of 9-4 in th second set before tallying four of the next six points to stretch the lead to 13-6. The Hawks managed to work the deficit down to 18-14 before the sides exchanged the following five points, 21-16. With UMO ahead 21-18, the Trojans scored four unanswered points to seal the set, 25-18.
In the third set, Mount Olive leaped out to a 10-2 advantage behind a trio of service aces from Cox. Chowan scored three of the next four points, but the Trojans responded with another 10-2 run to build a 21-7 lead. UMO finished off the sweep by scoring four of the final six points, 25-9.
Mount Olive returns to court tomorrow for a regional doubleheader against Georgia College and Augusta with the start time set for 2 p.m.
