MOUNT OLIVE (Oct. 16) – After conceding three goals in the second half on Wednesday night, the University of Mount Olive women's soccer program suffered a 3-0 loss against UNC Pembroke in Conference Carolinas divisional action at Amon Field.
With the loss, the Trojans fall to 4-3-3 this season with a 3-3-1 record in league play. Despite dropping the season series to UNCP, Mount Olive remains third in the east division standings. Meanwhile, UNC Pembroke improves to 7-2-3 overall behind a 6-0-3 mark in conference action.
The Braves held possession in the initial 20 minutes of the first half, recording five shots and hitting the crossbar twice. The Trojans settled in and found an offensive rhythm as junior
Addison Dangler hit the crossbar in the 26th minute off a corner kick into the box. UMO followed up with four additional shots, including a pair on goal, as the side remained deadlocked. At halftime, UNCP out-shot UMO by an 11-7 margin while the Trojans boast a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Mount Olive once again managed to withstand several attacking opportunities by the Braves with senior goalkeeper
Samantha Gildner collecting two saves in the opening 20 minutes of the second half. At the 66:39 mark, Eli Soderberg ended the scoreless drought after netting a goal off a rebound of an initial save to take a 1-0 edge. UNC Pembroke added to its lead in the 74th minute after Anna Grossheim registered an assist off a goal by Shakira Kafero Roberts, 2-0. Under two minutes later, UNCP produced a final insurance goal off the foot of Mercy Bell with an assist from Kafero Roberts, 3-0.
Gildner finished the contest with five saves while facing 29 shots in 90 minutes of action.
The Braves held a 29-13 advantage in total shots while also finishing with a 10-3 lead in corner kicks.
Mount Olive returns to Amon Field on Saturday, Oct. 19, when it hosts Senior Day versus Shorter in Conference Carolinas action with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
