Trojans Open Season With 2-0 Shutout of Shaw

MOUNT OLIVE – The University of Mount Olive women's soccer team opened the 2026 season in impressive fashion Friday evening, earning a 2-0 shutout victory over Shaw at Amon Field.

After a scoreless opening half, the Trojans broke through in the 61st minute when Sydney Garcia found the back of the net at the 60:38 mark. Garcia's goal was a beautiful header assisted by Charlotte Benson on a corner, giving Mount Olive a 1-0 advantage.

Mount Olive continued to pressure the Bears throughout the second half, recording nine shots after halftime and holding Shaw to four. The Trojans ultimately put the match away in the final seconds, as Rebecca Witkiewicz scored at 89:59 to double the lead and secure the 2-0 victory.
The Trojans controlled the offensive tempo throughout the match, finishing with a 22-5 advantage in shots and a 16-1 edge in shots on goal. Mount Olive also held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

In goal, Anais Coyne played all 90 minutes and recorded one save to earn the shutout.

The victory moves Mount Olive to 1-0-0 on the season, while Shaw falls to 0-1-0.

Mount Olive returns to action Sunday, Aug. 30, traveling to Aiken, S.C., to take on USC Aiken at 4:30 p.m.
