Kornegay named interim head coach for UMO Softball

MOUNT OLIVE (Oct. 10) – Following six years with the University of Mount Olive softball program Luke Shamblin has resigned as head coach of the Trojans to pursue new career opportunities. Assistant coach India Kornegay has been appointed as the interim head coach for the upcoming 2025 season.

Kornegay was recently hired as the pitching coach for Mount Olive and will continue to handle the day-to-day management of the pitching staff as interim head coach. As a player, Kornegay set every career pitching record with the Pacers and was a four-time all-conference selection in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC). She ranks fourth all-time in league history with 1,068 career strikeouts while sitting among the top 10 in conference history in games started (102) and innings pitched (749.1). Kornegay tossed six no-hitters at USC Aiken, including a perfect-game performance, striking out all 18 batters in a 10-0 victory over Paine (6 innings). She was a two-time NFCA and Daktronics All-Southeast Region selection and was the 2011 PBC Freshman of the Year.

"I am so excited to lead these women this year," said Kornegay. "There are big things happening at UMO and I'm so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of them!"

Kornegay finished her four-year intercollegiate career with a 71-39 record in the circle with 86 complete-game performances, including 34 shutouts. She held an impressive 1.65 ERA with the Pacers while holding opponents to a .162 batting average in 127 appearances.

Prior to UMO, Kornegay served as a pitching coach at Rock Gold VA in 2023-24, a Virginia travel softball organization located in Fairfax. She provided instruction to four pitchers and handled all pitch-calling duties. Additionally, Kornegay assisted with practice planning and coached first base on offense. She also worked at Pure Performance as an instructor providing pitching and hitting instruction to youth softball players.
Kornegay spent three years as a softball coach (2020-2023) with the Dixie Youth Softball League in Eufaula, Alabama, while also serving as a pitching instructor in her hometown.

At Eufaula High School, Kornegay was named the Alabama 5A Pitcher of the Year in 2010, closing her career with an astounding 0.77 ERA and 1,221 strikeouts. She still holds the Alabama state record with 36 strikeouts in a game following a 2-0 victory over Faith Academy in a 15-inning contest in 2009. Kornegay was a four-time All-State selection, Super 12 Selection, and All-Region Selection. In her senior season, she was an All-State Tournament team member and was named to the Alabama Sports Writers' Association Super All-State Team.

Kornegay earned her bachelor's degree in sociology from USC Aiken with a cognate in communications in 2014.

Last season, the Trojans registered the third-most wins in a single season after posting a 36-16 overall record while setting several program records. Mount Olive established the single-season mark with 78 home runs, the single-game record with 22 hits, and the single-game runs mark with 28. Additionally, the 2024 team finished among the top five all-time in single-season doubles (76), hits (470), and batting average (.336).
