BRISTOL, Tenn. (Jan. 14) – After being idle for nearly a month, the No. 18 ranked University of Mount Olive women's wrestling program featured five wrestlers on the podium, including runner-up finishes by junior Samantha Miller and sophomore Nia Miranda, at the Tornado Open hosted by King University on Sunday.

The Trojans featured 18 wrestlers at their opening event of 2024 and tallied 27 victories with nearly 20 teams participating. As a team, Mount Olive registered 16 wins via fall while also collecting seven tech falls with wrestlers in all 10 weight classes.

In the 109-weight class, Miller received an opening round bye before earning a first-period pin over Brianna Funakoshi of Life in the quarterfinals. She followed up with a 10-0 tech fall against Haley Zinninger of Emmanuel before suffering a 7-3 loss via decision in the first-place match to Emily Mendez of Adrian. Miller finished with a 2-1 record at King and entered the event as the No. 6 ranked wrestler at 109 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) rankings.

Miranda earned a bye in the opening round of the championship bracket before posting a first-period fall versus Taylor Whitehurst of the University of the Cumberlands. In the quarterfinals, she registered another victory by fall against Sophia Perry of Elizabethton before advancing to the final with a 9-4 decision over Nyla Burgess of Adrain. In the first-place match, No. 3 ranked Cheyenne Bowman of King captured the crown with a fall over Miranda in the first period. She closed the individual event with a 3-1 record with a pair of wins via fall.

At 130, freshman Brielle Bibla posted a 4-1 record to claim third overall in her respective weight class on Sunday. She produced a first-period fall versus Zoey Smith of the University of the Cumberlands in the opening round of the championship bracket. She recorded a 38-second fall in the next match against Angelina Knepp of Huntingdon before suffering a loss via a 10-0 tech fall to No. 3 ranked Maria Victoria Baez Dilone of King. In the consolation bracket, Bibla delivered a first-period pin of Jewelysa Funakoshi of Emmanuel before winning the third-place match over Isabella Hoffman of Emmanuel by fall.

Freshman Savannah Bramhall placed fourth overall on the podium at 170 in her debut with the program. In the quarterfinals, she produced a 17-6 tech fall against Cierra Abrego of the University of the Cumberlands before being pinned in the first period versus Raven Cook of Life. Bramhall rebounded in the consolation bracket with a 10-0 tech fall over Clara Massa of Life but lost in the third-place match to Katie Gakin of Emory & Henry by a 16-5 tech fall.

In the 191-weight class, sophomore Jada Arnold finished fourth after posting a 3-2 mark while competing in Tennessee. She registered a 10-0 tech fall in the first round over Ella Tallent of Emory & Henry before delivering another tech fall against Symphanie Sampson of Schreiner. In the semifinals, Arnold suffered a loss to Maquoia Bernabe of the University of the Cumberlands by fall. She responded with a win by an 8-4 decision versus Journey Land of Emmanuel before being pinned by Brittney Reed of Emory & Henry in the third-place match.

Mount Olive returns to the mat on Sunday, Jan. 21 for the Robert Horton Open hosted by Emmanuel University in Franklin Springs, Georgia.
