PETERSBURG, Va. (Sept. 19) – University of Mount Olive sophomore
Rasmus Ronnberg tied for sixth overall on Tuesday, as the Trojans placed fourth as a team at the Griffin Invitational, hosted by Saint Leo at the Country Club of Petersburg.
Mount Olive finished fourth in the team standings at the event with a 12-over 876 (297-288-291). The host Lions won the tournament by 11 strokes with a stunning 14-under 850 (286-284-280) after matching the lowest round of the event. Coker placed second in the standings with a three-under 861 (288-293-280) while Goldey Beacom finished third overall with a 10-over 874 (289-292-293).
Ronnberg carded an even-par 216 (73-73-70) and was one of nine golfers in the field to shoot even-par or better at the two-day event. He paced the team with 38 pars and made seven birdies while scoring an eagle in par-five 11th hole. It marks his second finish in the top-20 this season after tying for 17th in West Virginia.
Fellow sophomore
Max Lindblad placed 25th in a field of nearly 90 golfers after shooting a three-over 219 (73-74-72) with five birdies and 37 pars. Sophomore
Shawn Benson fired a five-over 219 (75-70-76) to finish tied for 31st overall with 29 pars and a team-high 11 birdies. Graduate student
Cade Hancock tied for 38th after posting a seven-over 223 (76-74-73) with six birdies and 36 pars. Junior
Gabriel Ekholm rounded out the team and tied for 52nd overall with an 11-over 227 (77-71-79) behind 29 pars and nine birdies.
Saint Leo junior Jake Nash cruised to medalist honors by six strokes with an incredible 11-under 205 (67-70-68) after collecting 13 birdies, plus two eagles.
The Trojans return to the course next week to compete at the 13th Annual Jay Jennison Cup on Sept. 25-26 in St. Augustine, Florida.
