GOLDSBORO, N.C. (March 28) – Freshman
Rasmus Ronnberg earned medalist honors and the University of Mount Olive men's golf team captured the tournament title by 23 strokes on Tuesday at The Trojan.
The Trojans posted a six-under 858 (285-286-287) at the Walnut Creek Country Club to record their first invitational title since Oct. 2021. UMO recorded the lowest scores over all three rounds of the two-day event. Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) finished second overall in the team standings with a 17-over 881 (287-296-298) at the 10 team event, while Post placed third with a 21-over 885 (299-286-300).
Ronnberg claimed medalist honors by one stroke after finishing with a six-under 210 (71-70-69). He matched his career-low round three-under 69 in the final round while securing his first career collegiate win. Ronnberg tied for first among the individual leaderboard with 14 birdies and added 30 pars, while carding an eagle on the par-five, first hole. He became the first UMO golfer to win an individual title since April 2022, when
Brice Ballin won the Conference Carolinas Championship.
Senior
Cade Hancock jump six positions on the final day and tied for fifth overall on the individual leaderboard with an even-par 216 (74-71-71). He tied for second in a field over 60 golfers with 40 pars made while tallying seven birdies. Freshman
Max Lindblad also tied for fifth place after firing an even-par 216 (70-72-74) with 38 pars and eight birdies over three rounds.
Senior
Shayne Dewitt leaped seven spots and tied for 18th place with an eight-over 224 (76-75-73) and ranked second on the team with nine birdies while totaling 29 pars. Freshman
Jonas Arnstrom Bakker rounded out the team scorers with a nine-over 225 (70-73-82) with 35 pars and five birdies.
Additionally, the Trojans featured a second team, which placed fifth in the team standings after carding a 29-over 893 (295-294-304). Freshman
Matthew Richardson paced the team after tying for fifth overall with an even-par 216 (71-71-74) and led the field with 41 pars. Junior
David Hoermann tied for 20th place with a nine-over 225 (79-71-75), while freshman
Shawn Benson tied for 25th overall with a 10-over 226 (70-73-82) with 30 pars and eight birdies. Just eight positions back, sophomore
Gabriel Ekholm tied for 33rd with a 14-over 230 (76-77-77) behind 28 pars and six birdies. Fellow sophomore
Justin Sterner rounded out the team after tying for 47th with a 23-over 239 (75-79-85).
Sophomore
Preston Patterson played as an individual and placed 57th overall with a 57-over 273 (88-89-96).
UMO are idle for nearly a month before returning for the Conference Carolinas Championship, beginning April 23 in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
