VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (Feb. 11) – In a preview of the national championship venue, the University of Mount Olive men's track & field program concluded the final day with a pair of podium finishes.
In the high jump, junior
Kamden Johnson and sophomore
Demonte Lavender finished tied for runner-up after clearing a height of 2.00 meters (6-6.75 feet).
Sophomore
Jaleal Hamlett set a season-best mark in the triple jump after reaching 14.37 meters (47-1.75 feet) to place seventh overall in the field. He continues to hold the top position in the Conference Carolinas and misses hitting an NCAA provisional mark by one centimeter.
In the weight throw, the Trojans featured three athletes in the top five of the standing. Sophomore
Alex Smith-Fort'e placed third overall after tossing a distance of 17.25 meters (56-7.25 feet), while teammate
Israel Long finished right behind after setting a mark of 16.09 meters (52-9.50 feet). Senior
Dorian Tolbert rounded out the top five with a distance of 15.64 meters (51-3.75 feet).
Junior
Jontavus Walker set the 10th-best all-time UMO mark in the 200 meters after crossing the line in 22.65 seconds while competing in Virginia.
Mount Olive returns to action next weekend on Feb. 19-20 at the Conference Carolinas Championships in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, at the JDL Fast Track.
