WINSTON-SALEM (Dec. 3) – Freshman
Ryan Wilson-McCoy broke the Mount Olive school record in the triple jump and set an NCAA provisional mark on Saturday, as the Trojans opened the indoor season at the Visit Winston-Salem Kick-off held at the JDL Fast Track.
Wilson-McCoy set a new school record on his final attempt in the triple jump with a distance of 14.61 meters (47-11.25 feet) in his first appearance with the program. He placed second overall behind Niejel Wilkins of Division I Appalachian State and broke the program mark set by Trevor Carr in 2019. Wilson-McCoy is the only jumper in the Southeast Region to establish an NCAA provisional standard this year.
Junior
Christopher Kirksey set a Conference Carolinas qualifying mark in 400 meters and claimed the event win after crossing the line with a time of 50.51 seconds on Saturday, which was the eighth-best mark in team history. He holds the top time in the league and second-fastest in the Southeast Region. Additionally, senior
Jontavus Walker qualified for the conference championship after placing fifth with a time of 51.25 seconds.
In the weight throw, the Trojans featured three student-athletes that reached the conference standard with a pair finishing in the top-10 overall. Senior
Alex Smith-Fort'e posted a fifth-place finish with a toss of 17.36 meters (56-11.50 feet) while junior
Israel Long finished 10th with a distance of 15.37 meters (50-5.25 feet) in the season-opening event. Senior
Dorian Tolbert also reached the league mark after registering a distance of 14.45 meters (47-8.00 feet).
Senior
Kamden Johnson established a pair of Conference Carolinas qualifying standards on Saturday. On his fifth attempt, he recorded a third-place finish in the high jump after clearing 1.99 meters (6-6.25 feet). Johnson finished eighth overall with a distance of 6.68 meters (21-11.00 feet) in the long jump. Additionally, sophomores
Kavon Poindexter and
Josh Manning hit the league mark in the high jump. Poindexter cleared 1.89 meters (6-2.25 meters), the 10th-best in program history. Manning reach the conference standard with a mark of 1.84 meters (6-0.5 feet).
Sophomore
Jason Hart qualified for the conference championship in a pair of events while competing in Winston-Salem. He placed fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.72 seconds, the third-best time in the Conference Carolinas this year. Hart crossed the line with a time of 7.08 seconds in the prelims of the 60-meter dash to hit the league standard.
The Trojans return to action on Sunday, Dec. 3, when they compete at the JDL Early Bird Invitational in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
